Under the Stars
The ARDA Ensemble of The Saint Louis Symphony will perform at 7pm on October 12 in the James S. McDonnell Planetarium. The performance will feature an original composition along with the stunning effects of the Planetarium’s night sky.
The Science of Avatar
Andrew Howell, professor of astrophysics at UC Santa Barbara and Las Cubres Observatory Global Telescope Network, looks at the real science and the science fiction in James Cameron’s blockbuster movie. What he got right and what he got really wrong!
Heko the Edutainer
Harri Montonen is a science showman, ex-rock star, and ex-teacher-to-be, working as a senior explainer and Science Circus director at HEUREKA, the Finnish Science Centre. After having given more than 3,422 science shows, he’s getting close to being quite amusing. His motto: “Science is not fun. Presenting it is.”
Journey through the Universe
Giovanni Fazio, Senior Physicist at the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, reveals our current knowledge of the Universe and our place in it.
Beyond Nemo: Climate change and coral reefs
Coral reefs are the rainforests of the ocean. These colorful underwater worlds contain more than a quarter of all the species found in the sea. They also happen to be more sensitive to climate change than any other ecosystem on the planet. Scientist Simon Donner will discuss what is happening to coral reefs across the planet, and what we can do to help them survive. Simon Donner, PhD, is assistant professor in the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia, Canada.

The President and Vice Chairman of the X PRIZE foundation, also film and television producer and graduate of Southern Illinois University Carbondale will present.
The Honeybees’ Battle for Survival
A mysterious disease is devastating the honeybee population. One of the foremost experts in the field, Mary R. Berenbaum, PhD, Professor and Department Head of Entomology at University Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, will lead a panel discussion that includes Ed Spevak, Entomologist at the Saint Louis Zoo, and Bob Sears, President of the Eastern Missouri Beekeepers Association.
What We Really Know about Climate Change: A Panel Discussion
Participants include Douglas Wiens, Professor of Earth & Planetary Sciences at Washington University; Jennifer R. Smith, Associate Professor of Earth & Planetary Sciences and Environmental Studies at Washington University; and William Dannvik, Professor & Department Chair, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Saint Louis University. Moderator: Jim Kramper, Warning Coordination Meteorologist, National Weather Service.
Climate Connections
Staff from the Saint Louis Science Center, the Saint Louis Zoo and the Missouri Botanical Garden will show you how to make “climate connections” – protecting the planet and preserving the environment and its diversity for your children and future generations.
Fountains of the Moon
Gregg Maryniak, Vice President and Director of the James S. McDonnell Planetarium, on the discovery of water on the moon and what that means for space exploration.
Trees!
What’s not to love about trees? The experienced staff of the Missouri Botanical Garden will share stories of conservation success from the field, test your Tree IQ and learn how trees can play a superhero role to cool down the planet. You’ll even get to take home a tree!
Say Cheese!
Meryl Winstein, professional cheese-maker in St. Louis, will take you on a delicious adventure in making your own cheese.
Music Therapy
Dr. Cynthia Briggs of Maryville University will share how music therapy is used in hospice care, hospitals and homes to help patients. This session will include participation by the Kids Rock Cancer organization.
Backyard Bio-Security
Whether you’re growing your own vegetables and fruit or raising chickens, what you need to know about protecting your farm or backyard from contamination. Panel discussion will include a representative of the US Department of Agriculture, a veterinarian, and Julie Weese-Young, longtime St. Louis urban chicken farmer.

Renowned physicist at the University of Maryland and member of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology; author of Superstring Theory: the DNA of Reality and of groundbreaking work in theoretical physics.
